is a research and design project focused on the typology of water towers in the whole area of northern Italy.
Hundreds of water towers have been geolocated, analyzed and catalogued if still active or not.
Based on their distinctive morphology and historical construction, water towers were grouped into three categories, each of which has great potential for replicability. Following the context, local regulations, and social needs, the former water towers were repurposed into cultural, sports, and hospitality facilities.
The project ranges from the urban scale, where the water towers are connected through a network of public activities; to the socioeconomic scale, where the new program has a role in activating the territory; to the design scale, where the construction choice and the specific use of materials create a dialogue between existing and new.
